Silicone, an inactive, colorless material that comes in various forms, such as oil, rubber, and resin, has been widely studied for decades. F. S. Kipping first coined the term silicone in 1901 to describe the formula of polydiphenylsiloxane. However, the discovery of the structural differences between Kipping’s molecules and the ketones means that silicone is no longer the correct term, though it remains in common usage today. The correct term is siloxane, as preferred according to the nomenclature of modern chemistry.
