PRINTING SUBSTRATES

Different material surfaces vary in terms of texture and surface tension (energy). If the surface energy of the substrate is lower than that of the ink, the printing ink will not adhere to the material. Use a dyne pen to test the surface energy of a substrate. As a rule of thumb, the surface energy of the substrate should be equal to or greater than that of the ink for proper ink adhesion. The higher surface energy of the substrate allows for the printing, decoration, and marking of the product.

Always perform adhesion testing on all new products prior to high-volume printing.

ADHESION TESTING METHODS

There are different methods for ink adhesion testing. The method depends on the specific requirements of the application. These testing methods are appropriate for UV ink, screen printing inks, and pad printing inks. Below are some common methods:

  • Chemical resistance testing involves using methyl or isopropyl alcohol. Simply pour a small amount of alcohol onto a folded towel. Rub the alcohol for 30–60 seconds over the decorated part with light pressure. If there is no ink on the paper, the ink has passed the chemical test.
  • Crosscut (hatch) test: this testing process involves creating a cross-cut pattern on the coated surface, then applying tape over the cuts. Remove the tape. Examine the amount of coating or ink removed to assess adhesion.
  • A scratch (abrasion) test involves using a sharp (abrasive) object to scratch the surface of the coated material.
  • The tape test, like the cross-cut test, involves applying adhesive tape to the coated surface and then peeling it off.
  • Pull-off test is commonly used for coatings on metal substrates. A specialized instrument applies a controlled force to a dolly or pull-off button bonded to the coating and measures the force required to pull the coating off.
  • Rub test is performed to assess how well the ink or coating withstands friction. This is an important test for materials that will undergo frequent handling.
