What is the purpose of an adhesion promoter?

Adhesion promoters, also known as surface pre-treatments, are chemicals or substances that enhance the bonding properties between two surfaces. These bonding agents work by modifying the surface properties, thereby making it possible for inks, coatings, paints, or adhesives to bond to the material. In summary, adhesion promoters enable inks, coatings, adhesives, or paints to stick to a surface by increasing the strength and durability of the bond.

What is the adhesion promoter for UV and UV LED inks?

The M87 is an example of an adhesion promoter that is useful when printing with UV and UV inkjet inks that are difficult to bond to materials like certain stainless steel, melamine, coated metals, and acrylics.

A stainless steel surface molecular activator is scientifically formulated to actively transform the micro-structure of stainless steel surfaces to create permanent bonding.

This metal UV adhesion promoter creates permanent bonding through the use of nano-scale materials, allowing bonding on virtually every type of metal surface. Both stainless steel and coated metals, aluminum are common substrates that are impossible to print. Examples of stainless steel applications are Stainless Steel Tumblers, Stainless Steel vacuum Insulated Water Bottles, Stainless Steel stemless Wine Glasses.

For traditional printing UVMK and MG Series ink for screen and pad printing are ideal to print on all metal substrates. However, due to stainless steel manufacturing process, printing is challenging compared to most substrates.

What is stainless steel?

According to Wikipedia Stainless steel is a group of iron-based alloys that contain a minimum of approximately 11% chromium. This composition prevents the iron from rusting and also provides heat-resistant properties.

Stainless steel’s resistance to rusting results from the presence of chromium in the alloy, which forms a passive film that protects the underlying material from corrosion attack, and can self-heal in the presence of oxygen. In addition, corrosion resistance can be increased further, by:

  • increasing the chromium content to levels above 11%;
  • addition of 8% or higher amounts of nickel; and
  • addition of molybdenum.

The addition of nitrogen also improves resistance to pitting corrosion and increases mechanical strength. Thus, there are numerous grades of stainless steel with varying chromium and molybdenum contents to suit the environment the alloy must endure. Learn more about stainless steel manufacturing.

What makes metal impossible to print with UV ink?

Stainless steel is an extremely difficult material to print using UV inkjet inks, due to its very smooth surface. Any type of ink does not adhere on stainless steel and coated metals.  Most durable UV inks have a problem with adhesion.

In addition, the manufacturing of stainless steel and coated metal involves adding chromium which creates self healing properties to metal in the presence of oxygen. This makes printing on stainless steel virtually impossible to print.

Preparing metal surfaces for inkjet printing

Stainless steel should never be painted unless it has first been abraded with a galvanized metal-etching primer.  It prepares the surface of the metal, which allows digital UV inkjet ink to adhere onto the metal surface. No other type of primer will promote adequate adhesion. Never paint over an un-primed stainless-steel surface, or the finish will chip and peel soon after application.

As a result, Boston Industrial Solutions, developed the M87 Stainless steel UV adhesion promoter.

Characteristics of  metals.

Characteristics of stainless steel are moderate corrosion resistance, are not susceptible to stress corrosion, magnetic, cannot be hardened by heat treatment. Other uses of stainless steel include annealed condition, and have a poor weld-ability for most grades. This latter characteristic also makes its difficult for UV inkjet inks to bond

UV ADHESION PROMOTER FOR PLASTICS

Natron® PP3 inkjet primer for plastics is a special primer formulated to guarantee printing ink adhesion on difficult-to-print low surface energy plastics such as polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), Polyacetal (POM), Nylon, EPT rubber, acetal, EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) and powder-coated substrates. PP3 is an adhesion promoter, anti-static agent, and cleaner designed for use with UV and LED curable inks on plastic substrates.

Both Polypropylene and Polyethylene are common plastics that have low surface energy making them impossible for great ink adhesion. This plastic primer  increases the plastics surface energy, which in turn improves the ink-substrate bond.

270 Hard and 314 Series UV and LED curable inkjet inks are ideal for printing on plastics. However, there are some plastics that are more challenging than others. These are low energy plastics according to finecal article “How to Bond Low Surface Energy (LSE) Plastics.” This low surface energy property inhibits an ink’s ability to properly ‘wet out’ or bond to the plastic surface. This of course causes problems with many plastic inks leading to weak adhesion or failure of the ink to adhere at all onto the plastic substrate. For this reason, you need Natron™ pp3 inkjet primer for plastics.

Characteristics of Low surface energy plastics, or LSE plastics

They are generally glossy, smooth and have a low melting point so they’re easy to process, even at high volumes, and they’re low-density, which helps with light-weighting. Because low surface energy is the primary characteristic of this group, they’re all more difficult to bond.

Inkjet primer for plastics primer

Additionally, the inkjet primer for plastics from Boston Industrial solutions works with all LSE plastic substrates. This primer will  will 100% work on any plastic substrate.

The Natron PP3 Plastic Primer is used to:

  • Reduces product surface tension for better bond
  • Guarantee ink adhesion polypropylene & polyethylene
  • It is also perfect for screen printing or pad printing applications

JETABLE UV ADHESION PROMOTER FOR METAL, GLASS, AND TILES

JP254 Jettable Adhesion Promoter guarantees UV ink adhesion to metals, glass, tiles, and ceramic materials. Similar to UV ink, UV jettable primers are printed on specific areas of a part and dried with UV light. To use this adhesion promoter, the UV printer requires an additional print head.

This digital primer improves UV ink adhesion between the UV ink and the material.

JP254 adhesion promoter eliminates the need to switch inks for different substrates.  This  high-performance jettable primer gets rid of wipe-on primers in the work environment. The JP254 UV Jettable Adhesion Promoter works well with all piezeo electric print heads including Toshiba, Ricoh Gen 3, 4, 5, Konica, and many more print-heads. Additionally, it has a shelf life of 18 months. Here is the technical data sheet for this primer.

The Benefits of a UV Jettable Primer

  • Improves adhesion to difficult substrates – even in wet conditions
  • Applied on demand in-line and only where necessary, thus saving time and money
  • Eliminates the need to switch to another ink, which is also often more aggressive
  • High jetting performance & reliability
  • Good curing speed
  • Long shelf life (18 months)

The JP254 Jettable Adhesion Promoter for metals, glass, and tiles requires an extra print head. UV printers are retrofitted with an extra print head to print the UV adhesion primer before the inks are printed. Many digital printing equipments have the space available to apply the digital primer in-line. Once implemented, it is a huge advantage to be able to enable or disable the application of the primer depending on the substrate to be printed on, rather than having to switch to another ink set that is specifically designed to print on the difficult substrate. In addition, ink sets for printing on glass or metal are hard to find and more aggressive to the system components, leading to more print head replacements and tube leaks.
